10 Truths That Will Make Your Life a Little Easier

🎧 Listen: Session 364 — 10 Truths to Make Your Life a Little Easier · ▶️ Watch: TBG on YouTube

Here’s something we don’t say out loud nearly enough: a lot of the heaviness we carry isn’t required. So much of what makes our days feel hard isn’t the big, unavoidable stuff of life — it’s the quiet ways we get in our own way. The standards we never agreed to but somehow keep trying to meet. The pace we set that no human body was built to sustain. The grudge we’re holding that’s only weighing down our own shoulders.

In one of her solo reflections, Dr. Joy invited us to sit with a simple, freeing idea: many of the things that make our lives more difficult than they need to be are things we actually have some say over. Not all of them — life will life. But more than we think. So consider this a permission slip and a gentle nudge, all in one. Here are ten truths to make your life a little easier.

1. You don’t have to earn your rest

Rest is not a reward you unlock after you’ve exhausted yourself. You are allowed to slow down before you hit empty. As Black women, so many of us were raised to believe our worth is tied to our output — that we have to be productive to be valuable. Let that go. You deserve rest simply because you’re human and you’re tired. Full stop.

2. “No” is a complete sentence

You do not owe everyone an essay justifying why you can’t, won’t, or would rather not. A boundary stops being a boundary the moment you negotiate it away to keep someone comfortable. Practice the clean no — kind, clear, and without a trail of apologies. The people who are meant to stay will adjust.

3. Not everything deserves your reaction

Someone can be wrong, rude, or out of pocket, and you still get to decide whether it’s worth your energy. Choosing peace isn’t the same as losing. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is let a moment pass through you instead of moving in. Your nervous system will thank you.

4. You are allowed to change your mind

The decision you made last year — about a job, a friendship, a goal, a version of yourself — does not have to bind you forever. Growth means you get new information and respond to it. Changing course isn’t flakiness; it’s wisdom in motion. You’re allowed to outgrow things, including who you used to be.

5. Comparison is stealing your joy in plain sight

Someone else’s highlight reel is not your behind-the-scenes. When you measure your real, unedited life against the curated best of everyone you follow, you will always come up feeling short — and it isn’t even a fair fight. Your timeline is yours. There’s room for you to be proud of where you are without diminishing it.

6. Your feelings are information, not instructions

You can feel anxious and still be safe. You can feel jealous and still be a good person. Feelings are data — they point you toward what matters — but they don’t always tell the truth about reality, and you don’t have to act on every one of them. Notice the feeling, get curious about it, then decide what you actually want to do.

7. You can love people and still protect your peace

Loving someone doesn’t require unlimited access to you. You can adore your family and still not pick up every call on a hard day. You can be a devoted friend and still need space. Distance isn’t always a punishment — sometimes it’s the very thing that lets a relationship survive.

8. Done is better than perfect

Perfectionism dresses itself up as a high standard, but most of the time it’s fear in a nicer outfit — fear of being judged, of not being enough. The email that’s “good enough” and sent will always do more for you than the perfect one still sitting in your drafts. Let yourself finish things imperfectly.

9. You get to ask for help

Needing support is not a character flaw, and you were never meant to do all of this alone. Whether it’s leaning on your circle, splitting the load at home, or sitting down with a therapist — asking for help is one of the most grown, self-respecting things you can do. Strength includes knowing when to reach out.

10. You are allowed to enjoy your life right now

You don’t have to wait until you’ve lost the weight, hit the goal, paid off the thing, or arrived at some future, more-deserving version of yourself to feel good. Joy isn’t the prize at the finish line — it’s something you get to gather along the way. Today counts. You count.

A gentle place to land

None of these are about doing more. If anything, they’re about putting some things down — the unearned guilt, the impossible standards, the weight that was never yours to carry in the first place. You don’t have to master all ten at once. Pick the one that landed hardest in your chest and start there.

This list is in no way exhaustive — and Dr. Joy would be the first to say she’d love to hear what you’d add.
